What is UK Lotto and how do you play it?
UK Lotto, also known as the National Lottery or UK Lottery, got its new name in 2002. While it was originally drawn only once a week, it is now drawn twice a week, on Wednesdays and Saturdays. For making the draw as random as possible, the game uses many different lottery machines and multiple sets of balls. The names of the lottery machines draw from the King Arthur stories or gemstones (examples are Arthur, Lancelot, Merlin and Guinevere).
To play Lotto UK you select 6 numbers from a set of 59 balls numbered 1 to 59, and if all 6 numbers match – you win the jackpot. However, you can also prizes by matching 5, 4, 3 and 2 numbers. Another option is matching five numbers and the Bonus Ball – a ball drawn from the remaining numbers after the 6 numbers were taken out. Prizes increase with the more numbers that match, the minimum of which is three numbers. If no player succeeds in matching all 6 numbers, the jackpot is added to that of the next draw (a “rollover”); the maximum jackpot can be £50 million.
To play UK Lotto, you must be at least 16 years old and buy tickets in person at approved premises in the UK or online.
The history of the UK Lotto
Playing lottery games in the UK goes all the way back to the 17th century. The earliest UK Lottery was established in the late 1690s by the English government, and its purpose was to raise capital for the state. In 1698 lotteries in England were declared illegal unless they were authorized by the statute. However in the 1930s small lotteries were legalized, which eventually led to the National Lottery being franchised by a private operator in the 1990s. Following financial difficulties due to falling sales, the game was rebranded Lotto in 2002. Today it is one of the most popular gambling forms in the UK.
Playing UK Lotto online
UK Lottery can also be played online – which means online players also have a shot of winning the jackpot or any other prize! Playing Lotto UK online can be done in one of two ways – either by a loaded account or by direct debit. Playing with a loaded account means that funds are loaded into the player’s account and he/she uses them to play. If players win, they get notified by the National Lottery by email, except in cases of Instant Wins, where the winnings are transferred directly to their accounts. Playing with direct debit means that players can sign up by providing their bank account details, and their numbers are entered automatically. Winners are notified by the National Lottery by email.
